March Avery

American, 1932-Present

Born in New York City to artists Milton and Sally Michel Avery, March Avery grew up immersed in artistic practice. Her parents’ studio served as both home and classroom, shaping a disciplined yet intuitive approach to artmaking that remains central to her practice today. Close family friends included Mark Rothko and Adolph Gottlieb—figures who helped define American modernism and whose influence shaped her creative upbringing.

A graduate of Barnard College in 1954, Avery did not pursue formal studio training but instead learned by painting alongside her father and absorbing his sense of composition. She exhibited her early works in various family exhibitions, including Milton Avery, Sally Michel, March Avery in Atlanta and Avery Family Group Show in New York. While their styles are often compared, March’s work stands apart for its subtle humor, attention to everyday scenes, and refined palette.

Her paintings have been exhibited at institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, Chrysler Museum of Art, and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, as well as with respected galleries in New York, Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo. In June 2021, Afternoon in July set a world auction record for the artist at Doyle, realizing $37,800 and affirming renewed market interest in her work. Now in her 90s, Avery continues to paint daily from her longtime Greenwich Village studio—quietly adding to a body of work that spans decades.
